Sanmar Speciality Chemicals Limited (SSCL), Berigai, organised a short term programme in November 1999 on the Basics of Chemical Engineering for the post-graduates and graduates in chemistry who have joined the company.
SSCL team members who attended the training programme.
The objectives of the programme were:
To provide a basic foundation in chemical engineering to the non-engineering graduates in the production/quality/R&D departments.
To enable graduates in chemistry to perform more effectively on the job by providing them conceptual knowledge and skills in chemical engineering.
To offer critical inputs to students which are required to increase value additions on the job
Fourteen employees from various departments including Production, R&D and Quality attended this programme, conducted by the Chemical Engineering department of Adhiyamman College of Engineering at Hosur. The college is well equipped with a laboratory, library and other facilities to offer training, as well as a well qualified faculty.
As part of the training programme, the faculty members of the chemical engineering department of the college visited Berigai to understand the production process and experience the facilities available at the plant.
They later drew up a detailed syllabus for the students of our plant. P M Rao, AVP-Works, took a lot of interest in fine tuning the syllabus. The training programme spread over three weeks of four hours everyday, included both theory and practical sessions.
The topics dealt with were:
Fluid Mechanics, Material and Energy Balances, Heat Transfer, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Mass Transfer, Material Handling, Environmental Engineering, Utilities Systems Engineering, Analytical Methods and Equipment and Basic Electrical Engineering.
