Sanmar Speciality Chemicals Limited (SSCL), Berigai, recently commenced a unique interface with one of its valuable customers M/s Cheminor Drugs Ltd., (CDL), Hyderabad.
The efficient housekeeping activities of SSCL based on the Japanese 5-S way, caught the attention of the officials of CDL during their audit of the Berigai facility in August last year. 5-S is a Japanese concept for better housekeeping.

The 5-Ss in the Japanese language are:
a) SEIRI means clearing unwanted things from the work place.
b) SEITON means arranging things in an orderly user-friendly way.
c) SEISO means sweeping the workplace regularly.
d) SEIKETSU means cleanliness.
e) SHITSUKE means discipline.
The 5-S programme was started to improve the housekeeping in Sanmar Speciality Chemicals Limited, Berigai. Each employee there is allotted a place in the factory premises. The upkeep of the place is the responsibility of that person, and his name will be displayed in that place as, “This place is maintained by NAME OF THE PERSON...”. Two persons identified by the 5-S coordinator Dr T Devanathan, audit the workplace. Marks are awarded by the auditees, and compiled by the 5-S coordinator and displayed in the 5-S corner. The marks scored by the employees are reckoned by their superordinates in evaluating their performance. A six-member team from CDL visited Berigai on October 5, 2000, for an on-the-spot study of the 5-S concepts followed at the plant.
The team spent the whole day going around the facility and interacting with SSCL personnel on the benefits of 5-S. Impressed with SSCL’s way of functioning, P M Rao, AVP-Works, of the Berigai factory, was invited by CDL to be the judge for their inter-plant 5-S competition. Rao audited all their plants at Jeedimetla, Miryalaguda and Vizianagaram between November 27th and 30th, 2000. This was a unique step towards improved customer interaction.
