Logistics 2001, the third edition of the biennial four day international exhibition and two day conference on transportation and supply chain management, was held by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at Chennai during September 2001. Inaugurating the event, Arun Jaitley, Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, said substantial progress had been made in economic reform in the last decade in the logistics sector, including ports, resulting in flow of private investment, elimination of shortages, improvement in efficiency and lowering of costs. S Mahalingam, Chairman, CII-Southern Region, said the CII proposed to hold an “Education Summit” and undertake an adult literacy campaign in view of the importance of “educational infrastructure” for economic growth.
At the valedictory seminar organised as part of Logistics 2001, the Union Shipping Minister, Ved Prakash Goyal said the centre was keen to attract private participation in developing inland waterways. N Kumar, Chairman, Logistics 2001, and past President of CII, said the CII-Southern Region planned to launch a logistics institute. He urged the centre to review various laws, including those pertaining to multi-modal transport of goods. He stressed the need to treat air as a mode of transportation for these purposes.
