Masters Trophy draws big crowds |
Charu Sharma, the Master of Ceremonies, announcing the winners.
Thalassery, a small town in Northern Kerala, wore a festive look on March 31, 2002. It seemed the whole town was taking part in the 200th anniversary of cricket at Cannanore, an event that was sponsored by AMP Sanmar. A souvenir was released by P V Subramanian, Consultant- Operations, AMP Sanmar, to commemorate 200
years of cricket at Cannanore District Cricket Association (CDCA).
There were AMP Sanmar banners all over the town announcing an exhibition match between Srikkanth’s India XI and Ranatunga’s Sri Lanka XI. A crowd of ten thousand came to watch the match braving the merciless sun. They stayed on till the last wicket was taken. The people of Thalassery, who are as passionate about cricket as Brazilians are about soccer, responded to the match in admirable fashion.
Srikkanth’s India XI won the match.
The scores:
India XI 289 for six in 45 overs (S Ramesh 32, Dilip Vengsarkar 49, Syed Kirmani 58, Mohinder Amarnath 39, Sunil Joshi 49, Arjuna Ranatunga three for 40) beat Sri Lanka XI 160 in 34.2 overs
(Roy Dias 28, Arjuna Ranatunga 30, Salil Ankola two for 21, Karsan Ghavri two for 33, Sadagopan Ramesh four for 42.)
